Utah Wonderstone

First Rock Trip of the Year: Wonderstone!

The new year finally gave us a good weekend, decent weather (the recent big winter storm completely skipped over us), and enough free time to get out the door — so we pointed Big Zippy toward Vernon, Utah and officially kicked off our first rockhounding trip of the year.

This trip felt like a milestone for CampRockRambler. Not just because we got dirt on our boots again, but because a few firsts happened all at once.

Back on the Dirt in Vernon, Utah

Vernon is one of those places that feels familiar in the best way. Wide open views, quiet roads, and plenty of space to slow down and wander. The goal for the day was simple: stretch our legs, enjoy being outside, and see if we could uncover some Wonderstone along the way.

And it didn’t take long.

Wonderstone has a way of stopping you mid-step. Those swirling patterns and earthy colors never get old, even when you’ve seen them a hundred times before. Some pieces were subtle and smooth, others looked like they were showing off on purpose. We took our time, hiked around the hills and gulleys, and let the day unfold without rushing it.

Collecting Wonderstone (and Smiles)

We came home with a small but solid haul — pieces with strong patterns, interesting shapes, and a few that immediately earned a spot on the “definitely keeping this one” list.

This trip wasn’t about filling buckets. It was about reconnecting with why we started rockhounding in the first place:

  • Being outdoors
  • Slowing down
  • Finding beauty where most people just see rocks

Mission accomplished.

Our First YouTube Video (Learning Curve Included)

Somewhere between digging and walking, we hit another big milestone — we recorded our very first YouTube video.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not.

Is it real? 100%.

We filmed the drive, the location, the hunt, and the cleanup. There were moments of rambling, moments of silence, and moments where we realized later the phone hanging from a strap was recording. But that’s kind of the point. You have to start somewhere, and this was us starting.

If you want to see Vernon through our eyes — the good, the awkward, and the Wonderstone — you can check out the video on our YouTube channel.

A Mini Photo Studio Is Born

Back at home, the momentum kept going.

We finally carved out a small corner of our spare bedroom and turned it into a mini photo studio. Nothing fancy — just a simple setup that lets us photograph specimens cleanly and consistently.

It feels good to see CampRockRambler slowly taking shape in physical space, not just as an idea.

Nikon Coolpix L330. Old but still snaps a pic!

Looking Ahead

This first hunt of the year is just an appetizer:

  • More hunts are planned Utah, Nevada, Wyoming
  • More learning, I am a rookie at all of this!
  • Camping Trips!

Vernon reminded us why we love doing this, and it feels like we’re just getting started.

Here’s to dirty pants, lost tools, and picking up just one more!
